It Could've Be Us

Dear God,

What in the hell is going on in the world? Some lunatic opened fire in a church in a very small town in Texas, on Sunday, in the middle of a service, murdering at least twenty-six people and injuring over twenty more member of their congregation. The people killed were eighteen months-to-seventy-seven years old. What harm does an eighteen-month-old baby do to anyone? Or a fourteen-year-old pastor's daughter? Or a seventy-seven year old grandparent? What harm did any of them do to anyone, gathering to peacefully worship You on a Sunday morning?

Are we supposed to be okay with this? Are we really supposed to forgive some deranged idiot who snuffed out more than four percent of a town's entire population? Not a single citizen was left untouched by this incident; everyone must have known everyone in a town with only six hundred fifty residents in it. How do You expect them to "move on" when every place they go is a reminder of another member of their community who was gunned down and stolen from them, without any warning?

Are You really all that omniscient if You can't get in a gunman's mind and cause him to rethink assassinating innocent churchgoers? What good is sitting up there watching all this happen if You don't do anything about it? That easily could have been me or me family or our neighbors or friends--we live only forty-five minutes from that First Baptist Church, in Sutherland Springs. Is this what our sick world is coming to, where we need to watch our backs when we pray to You in Your own house now? Will this depravity ever end?
